In a recent publication from Mendelsohn and Warren from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, the prevention and treatment of the Female Athlete Triad was evaluated. The authors described the increasing prevalence of this interrelated condition and that an athlete can suffer from all 3 components of the triad, or just 1 or 2 of the individual conditions. It appears as though the key element underlying all the triad is a negative caloric balance and hormonal adaptations to conserve energy for vital physiological function. Screening for these disorders should be an important component of an athlete’s care and involve a team approach, including a physician, a nutritionist, and a mental health provider.
